The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was implemented in Cyprus as well as in all other EU members, as from 25/5/2018.
According to information published by the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection in Cyprus, by 31/12/2018, the Commissioner’s Office:
- Had received 281 complaints, 103 of which concern spam.
- Had received 32 notifications of personal data breach, and
- Had issued 4 decisions, by which it imposed administrative fines of total amount of €11,500.
The Commissioner acting within its competence, has imposed a fine of €10,000 to a newspaper which published the name and photo of police officers in relation to a claimed hardship and unnecessary and illegal arrest of a citizen. The Commissioner decided that the intended purpose could have been achieved by the mere reference to the initials of the names of the police officers and/or the use of blurred photos and/or photos taken from a long distance so that their identity could not be recognized, which would not have changed the nature of the case. The newspaper has filed an administrative recourse against the Office of the Commissioner in relation to the imposed penalty.
